In 1924, the Dassler brothers — Adolf and Rudolf — founded a company that produced athletic shoes. Their business quickly became popular, and their footwear was soon in high demand among athletes.
But after World War II, the brothers had a serious falling-out. They decided to split both the property and the company. Adolf Dassler created Adidas, while Rudolf initially named his company RuDa, later rebranding it as Puma.
That is how one family feud gave birth to two of the world’s most famous sportswear brands.
Interestingly, the small German town of Herzogenaurach, where both Adidas and Puma have their headquarters, was also divided into two camps. Locals were even said to judge whether someone was “one of theirs” by looking at their shoes.
