New COVID-19 Variant Stratus (XFG) Spreads Rapidly Worldwide

In August 2025, health authorities are reporting a surge in cases of the new COVID-19 variant Stratus (XFG), first detected in Canada. This recombinant of Omicron subvariants has already been found in dozens of countries, making up over 20% of sequenced samples. The most distinctive feature of Stratus is early-stage hoarseness, along with dry cough, runny nose, and headaches. WHO considers the risk low but recommends updated vaccination and preventive measures.
