Ukrainian troops have intercepted and destroyed an unusually designed Russian attack drone whose circular wing made it look more like an aircraft from a science-fiction movie than a conventional unmanned aerial vehicle. Its distinctive appearance prompted comparisons with a UFO.
The incident was reported by technology publication TechRadar, citing information about Ukrainian military operations.
On October 8, 2026, operators from Ukraine’s 414th Birds of Magyar Brigade detected and destroyed the Russian drone during an aerial engagement.
Unlike conventional fixed-wing aircraft, the intercepted UAV featured a continuous circular wing surrounding its central fuselage.
The unusual design initially prompted comparisons with an unidentified flying object.
However, the aircraft was subsequently identified as the Russian KVS attack drone, officially named Knyaz Vladimir Svyatoslavich.
According to TechRadar, the drone was developed by Russia’s Ushkuynik research center, which specializes in military unmanned aerial systems.
The aircraft’s defining feature is its annular wing, designed to support vertical takeoff and improve efficiency during horizontal flight.
This aerodynamic configuration differs from conventional fixed-wing drones and represents an attempt to enhance the performance of unmanned strike platforms.
The exact operational range of the KVS has not been publicly confirmed in TechRadar’s report. The drone is reportedly intended for intermediate-range strike missions.
Despite its unusual design, the aircraft was successfully intercepted by Ukrainian forces.
The incident highlights Russia’s continuing experimentation with unconventional drone technology, as well as Ukraine’s efforts to adapt its air defenses and drone-interception capabilities to emerging aerial threats.
