In the early 1990s, George Michael decided to cover “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” a song originally released by Elton John on the album Caribou. The original featured backing vocals from members of The Beach Boys and rich brass arrangements, yet it wasn’t considered one of Elton’s biggest hits at the time.
When Michael shared his idea, Elton reportedly called him and said simply: “Don’t do it.”
He believed the song wasn’t strong enough for an artist like George.
But Michael took the risk.
The duet version, released in November 1991, quickly climbed the charts and reached No. 1 in the United States on February 1, 1992. It became one of the most iconic performances of George Michael’s career.
Years later, Elton John described him as one of the greatest songwriters and vocalists of all time.
Sometimes even legends misjudge.
Sometimes you just have to trust your instinct.
