In Konchi village, Gaya district, Bihar (India), 74‑year‑old retired serviceman Mohan Lal organised his own funeral ceremony. Villagers believed he had died and hundreds came to mourn.
Just before the cremation ritual, Lal rose from the coffin and revealed he was alive — he explained that his aim was to witness firsthand how much affection and respect people had for him while he was still alive.
He had earlier commissioned and financed creation of a cremation ground named “Muktidham” in his village to address logistic problems with funerals during the rainy season.
