The City Council of Dnipro (formerly Katerynoslav and Dnipropetrovsk) is considering redefining the city’s official founding year. Traditionally, the date of 1776—marking the founding by Catherine II—has been used. Now, a working group led by Deputy Mayor Andrii Denysenko proposes to trace the city’s origins back to 16th-century Cossack settlements, such as Novyi Kodak and Polovytsia, predating the imperial era by centuries.
Denysenko criticized the 1776 date as an imperial construct overshadowing Ukrainian heritage. The proposal is currently under academic review and may soon be opened to public consultation and formalized legally
