Kyiv’s International Center for Culture and Arts recently premiered “On the Beautiful Blue Danube”, a modern ballet production by renowned choreographer Radu Poklitaru. Set to the music of Johann Strauss, this performance blends classical traditions with bold experimentation—from video art to unexpected plot twists.
The show captivates with its mix of humor, contemporary visual effects, and the absence of classical ballet elements like pointe shoes. Poklitaru’s choreography pulses with energy and irony, while stage imagery includes subtle allusions to social themes, including LGBTQ+ references.
Though Strauss’s music played from a recording (without a live orchestra), the production remained vibrant and dynamic.
This performance stands as proof that Ukrainian culture continues to thrive and evolve despite war. It demonstrates how art can stay relevant, daring, and even slightly provocative—winning audiences through its boldness.
Would Strauss himself have approved of this interpretation? That remains an open question. But one thing is certain: contemporary ballet can be utterly mesmerizing.
