In a bold attempt to receive government compensation, a resident of the Izium district demolished his own house to make it look like it had been hit by artillery. Armed with a hammer and some imagination, he staged damage resembling a Grad rocket attack.
He submitted a claim through the Diia app, received a certificate for 600,000 UAH, and used it to buy an apartment in Kharkiv. However, forensic experts found no signs of shelling — only tool marks and deliberate destruction.
Now he faces up to 8 years in prison for fraud. Even during war, not every ruin is a valid claim.
